The latest Ned talk — From Bachman Greenbelt to Texas Wilderness — was a hit at the Friends of Bachman Lake gathering on May 12, held at the beautiful Bachman Lake Dallas Public Library.
Ned Fritz found his first inspiration off Bachman Creek, which bisected his property on Cochran Chapel Rd. When he got wind of city plans to channelize the creek, this he would not abide. He formed a group, Save Open Space, to rally the neighborhood and nature lovers across the city. In the process, he introduced the concept of greenbelts to the city. Ned loved Texas, but no place more so than Bachman Creek, on whose banks he lived with his family for over five decades.
We also heard from Jamie Baxter-Slye, who is managing two UNT interns working on their summer projects in the Bachman Greenbelt. They’ll be able to compare their data to Ned’s many plant and animal lists he made in the Greenbelt in the ’60s to ’80s, which are part of the Ned Fritz Legacy files.
